In the new issue of Empire, director Gareth Edwards discusses the meaning of the Rogue One moniker. Like some of the best Star Wars titles, it can be read and understood several different ways. Edwards tells Empire:

“I’d been thinking about it,” he reflects in the new issue of Empire. “What does it mean? ‘Rogue One’ is a military call sign to some extent,” he adds, referring to Red Squadron during the Battle of Yavin, “but this is the first film that’s gone off-piste and is not part of the saga – or the Anakin story – so it’s the ‘rogue’ one, you know?”

I laughed. It is indeed the rogue one. I would guess the general audience doesn’t know or recall that Rogue Squadron was a thing from the original trilogy of films. If it does evolve out of this plan, it will interesting to see if they really explain that or leave it tacitly stated in the film.

Now my quest to get all the new Empire covers continues. I don’t keep much from the media campaigns for the films, but I kept my Star Wars: The Force Awakens issues of Empire as they’re beautifully done.
