Rogue One: A Star Wars Story panel info, poster, and Sizzle Reel!
While we saw listings on cable guides promising a three-minute trailer today, we were instead gifted a sizzle reel. The reel features a behind-the-scenes look at Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The reel is the highlight of the biggest panel of the weekend at Celebration Europe. The panel opened with the classic A New Hope crawl which devolved into the chaos of war.
An energetic Gwendoline Christie then took the stage and hosted the panel. She asked for a moment to acknowledge the tragic events that took place in France over the last week. Then Kathleen Kennedy, director Gareth Edwards, Kiri Hart, and John Knoll took the stage. Kennedy noted that we are celebrating 40 years since A New Hope started filming in London.
Kennedy defined “A Star Wars Story” as the opportunity to tell stories outside the sequel or prequel structure which can explore different experiences in the Star Wars universe. She said she chose Gareth Edwards because his style is unlike any other Star Wars film because he shoots with the camera on his shoulder and he immerses us inside the movie.
Edwards said he is a lot like us, the people in the audience as he’s a Star Wars fan. A particular memorable day for him was the day he met Mark Hamill in a Godzilla shirt.
John Knoll says it started 13 years ago when he heard about the live-action television series that George Lucas and Rick McCallum were developing. He worked out the concept and then found out the timeline didn’t match up. He pocketed the idea and brought it up later on when he found they were going to be making stand-alone films years later. He told friends at work about it and they encouraged him to pitch it to Kennedy and Hart.
Knoll shared this concept art:
Edwards talked about Scarif, the paradise world and using Maldives military to play Stormtroopers. The Maldives do not have any idea what they are playing.

The main cast of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story then took the stage:
Then Director Krennic himself came out in costume:
After the sizzle reel they showed the Jyn action figure:
Captain Cassian Andor works for Rebel intelligence, according to Diego Luna. The most important member of the team is an Imperial Droid K2-So which is Cassian’s best friend in the rebellion. Alan Tudyk then showed us some K2 footage:
K2 was reprogrammed by Andor and after the memory wipe he sort of acts like a rude old person. He talked about Anthony Daniels calling him a shit for getting to be CGI.
Riz Ahmed then talked about Bodhi wearing an Imperial patch on his arm. He was a pilot that works for the Empire. He questioned the Empire and the planet he is from is an occupied planet and it makes him question is career choice.
Jeddha is where Donnie Yen and Jian Wen’s characters come from. Donnie Yen says his character cannot see but he can feel with his heart. He and Wen’s characters are the toughest guys on the planet. Baze has a gun is what Wen decided to share. A huge gun. It also sounds like he implied his partner dies.
Forest Whitaker then talked Saw Gerrera a little and how there are different rebel groups coming together as an alliance. He’s the leader of his group and will do anything he has to do.
Gareth Edwards talks about when George Lucas visited the set one day. He said “shit!” He thought it was a joke.
They confirmed that Galen Erso is Jyn’s father and he created something amazing.
Krennic is a different kind of bad guy. He’s an Australian kind. He’s smarter than most of the Imperials and more inventive. Then they confirmed Darth Vader again. Gareth Edwards teased that James Earl Jones returned to do voice work. Vader says “power” and they all had a nerdgasm.
The panel ended with:
The secret #RogueOne footage showed a fiery red reflection on a glistening floor – and a dark figure who rasps a single mechanical breath.

Also in #RogueOne secret footage: a little girl running across the tundra where we've seen a Death Trooper holding a toy soldier. Young Jyn?
