MTV spoke to Neal Scanlan, who created the wonderful creatures for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and is now working on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Scanlan says that we should not expect there to be huge creature shots in the film and that the aliens in the film will be placed into it realistically. So instead of there being huge shots of cantinas and places like Maz’s Castle, we’re going to see the aliens residing next to actual people, meaning the work needs to hold up against real life. Scanlan tells MTV:

“Working with Gareth now on ’Rogue One,’ he sees these aliens as being much more part of the human [world]. They co-habitate, they work together and so it’s pushed us very much to create characters that are more realistic.”

He also adds:

“They move more realistically, they’re able to emote more than maybe the characters that we did for ’The Force Awakens.’ So they’re a closer part of the storytelling. They’re less of the world, and they’re more of this group who have a mission, and play a part in that.”

In both A New Hope, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens there are moments that sort of say we’re going to celebrate this insane world created for Star Wars. They show the creatures in all their glory, fast, and then briskly move back to the story beats. From the sound of Rogue One it isn’t the kind of movie that takes us to those type of places. The movie is about the mission and the mission apparently doesn’t take too many detours.

I am a monster fan. I love seeing all the creatures and stuff they create for the new films. I am absolutely loving the work Scanlan did on The Force Awakens and the idea that Rogue One might take the creature design into a different place is really exciting. The new Topps Star Wars Card Trader 2016 cards just hit and I find myself enjoying the monsters of The Force Awakens more than anything, really.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is shaping up to be a really cool movie by the sounds of things.
