Star Wars: Episode IX’s Colin Trevorrow on Rey theories!
With Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII about to get into full swing, the writer and director for Episode IX, Colin Trevorrow, is already in the early stages of developing his Star Wars film. Collider is reporting that he has heard the theories of Rey’s parentage and he’s promising a satisfying answer. Here’s a quote from him:
I’ve seen all of the theories… What I do know is that we’re going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying, because Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens but in the entire galaxy, and she deserves it. So we’ll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was—it’s something that happened a long time ago [in a galaxy] far, far away, we’re just telling you what happened.
These are promising words. It’s interesting how this implies that we will get the answer in Episode IX and not VIII. With so many believing the theory that Rey is related to Luke, and since it appears they will be together, perhaps Johnson won’t give us the answer many will be expecting.
The article also confirms that Trevorrow is already in the process of creating the story he wants to write, along with frequent collaborator Derek Connolly. When asked about how he approaches the last installment of this trilogy, and the whole saga thus far, Trevorrow said:
By the time we get to Episode IX, I look at that movie as one movie, as three movies, as six movies, and as nine movies. It’s something that needs to honor a story that has been told over a period of 40 years… Star Wars is a belief system, it’s not just a story and it’s not just a movie, and it’s something I take very seriously.
