Star Wars: Episode VIII production delayed and an Asian actress cast?
Over the last month or so there’s been a lot of talk about Star Wars: Episode VIII being delayed. I know the schedule had a shakeup and start dates were shuffled for a lot of people in different parts of production. Schedule shifts and stuff aren’t generally anything huge, but I did find it interesting that several people were experiencing such shifts. Now a story has hit which puts this into perspective.
At 23:00 minutes into the new “Meet the Movie Press,” Jeff Sneider from The Wrap says that an “asian actress” got the role Bel Powley was mentioned has having been up for. The reason for the delays, according to Sneider, is that there is a rewrite going on. The rewrite is going to make the new roles smaller and Finn and Rey’s parts bigger. The idea is to let us know the roles introduced in The Force Awakens better and that has shrunk the new roles to some significance.
It seems like the delay is not going to affect the release date at all. However, if it did affect the release date, I’m not so sure it would be seen as the worst thing. Right now Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: Episode VIII are only about five months apart. December also performed really well for The Force Awakens as a release month. Should there be any delays during production from something like the accident Harrison Ford suffered in The Force Awakens, that will be more of a possibility than just a month delay. I don’t think anyone feels the movie is being pushed back from release because of a one month production delay.
Hopefully this writing delay ends up being fortuitous for Colin Trevorrow’s Star Wars: Episode IX as well.
